Home health care is different from non-medical home care
Home health is clinical care provided by licensed professionals and is commonly ordered by a physician for a defined period. Non-medical home care generally provides ongoing assistance with personal care, supervision, meals and household tasks.

Wound care, injections, health monitoring, medication teaching and other services requiring a licensed nurse.
Private-Duty Nursing
Extended nursing support for individuals with complex medical needs. Coverage and availability vary significantly.
Therapy at Home
Physical, occupational or speech therapy intended to improve strength, mobility, daily functioning, communication or swallowing.
Understanding coverage
Medicare and health insurance may cover qualifying, medically necessary home health services when eligibility requirements are met. They generally do not cover long-term custodial care or continuous household assistance. Families should confirm coverage directly with the provider and insurer.
Questions to ask a home health agency
• Is the agency Medicare-certified and licensed in Maryland? • Which services are included in the care plan? • How often will each clinician visit? • Who coordinates changes with the physician? • What after-hours support is available? • What costs may remain the family’s responsibility?
